What Are the Benefits of Using Oil Heat?

One of the questions we receive is “Is Oil Heat safe?” and the answer is always yes. It’s safer for you and the environment. Fuel oil is not explosive like natural gas is. Inhaling fuel oil fumes is not fatal like natural gas is. And unlike gas where there is no warning of carbon monoxide release, oil heating gives warning signs before producing hazardous levels of carbon monoxide such as smoke or odors.

Is Oil Heat Efficient? Yes.

Oil safely burns hotter than natural gas which means you’ll be warmer for less. Higher efficiency of up to 95 percent means you’ll save more gallons of oil, and you’ll spend less on your heating bill. Fill out our form to request service.

When Is a Good Time to Order Oil?

On a standard 275-gallon oil tank, there is normally a gauge on the top of the tank to let you know how much oil you have.

• If the gauge reads 3/4 you have approximately 200 gallons
  
• If the gauge reads 1/2 you have approximately 130 gallons
  
• If the gauge reads 1/4 you have approximately 70 gallons, and at this point is the time we recommend you order oil
  

When you get close to the 1/8 mark and below, you risk sludge getting stirred up when the tank gets filled, which can cause potential problems with the unit such as plugged nozzles, which would promote a possible service call. Also, if you do run out of fuel, the unit will need to be primed as air gets into the lines, which could promote a service fee as well.

Standard usage on a cold winter day is 5-7 gallons a day, so keep that in mind when extreme temperatures are forecasted, as you will go through it more quickly than you may have anticipated!

So good rule of thumb, call when your gauge is at 25% or a bit above.

Products You Can Rely On

• Fuel Oil - Standard residential fuel for indoor tanks, such as a basement or garage.
  
• Kerosene for outdoor tanks. When temperatures are below freezing, kerosene is the fuel of choice for outside tanks, as fuel oil can tend to gel at freezing temperatures, where kerosene will not.
  
• Winter Blend - a 50/50 mix of fuel oil and kerosene. Some people choose to use a blend of the 2 products for outside tanks.
  
• On-Road Diesel for your commercial needs.
